Haven’t Done This In A While
Well, I guess I’m going to start blogging some. I have too many thoughts to let them all go to waste in my head, so I want a place to save them. Whether anyone else reads them or not isn’t really my concern.
Today as my wife, Caity and I were talking about love, I was compelled to look up the definition according to dictionary.com. Caity had been talking to someone who said love was definitely conditional. It was a giving of tangible services out of an expectation for the return of similar services with equal value. I was amazed by this. So I replied to her with certainty that the dictionary would surely tell a different story…WRONG. Unfortunately it only gives the definition of love which comes from the Greek word “phileo”, which is in fact conditional. I looked it up and found these definitions and others similar to it:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
This type of love, the Love that has power to save the world from the punishment we deserve, is from the Greek word “agape”…it’s unconditional, free, and just all around better than phileo. It has the type of security that one can only receive from knowing that the Great Judge is, in fact, on his or her side. That this all-powerful Being doesn’t want to send us to eternal damnation and judgment, but He wants us to be His children. He created us for that, and even after every single one of us turned our backs to Him and even mocked His Greatness, He pursues us to be His beloved. Even though we continue to sin daily and break His heart over and over and over, He still chooses to love us with a love that cannot be stopped by any means. He pursues us as we run from Him. He wants to give us so much, but our fear drives us away. If only one would put his guard down against the guilt and the fear and let God in and listen to His words of Love, he would know peace and a hope that cannot be conjured up from anything but the Love of Christ.
So there’s my take on Love. The type of love found in Hollywood and in uncontrollable “emotional” love do not only miss the mark, but they are a tool to deceive people and steer them away from knowing the TRUTH about LOVE. Every day I try to open myself to be used by God to break down these lies of fear and insecurity and to demonstrate the Love God has first demonstrated toward me.
